Amundi is the largest asset manager in Europe. It was formed in 2010 as a result of the merger of the asset management activities of Crédit Agricole and Société Générale. SPJ supported Amundi with its communications in the Netherlands from 2010 through 2015.

SPJ’s role was to strengthen Amundi’s profile among Dutch private and institutional investors. We advised the company on opportunities in the Dutch market, maintained contacts with leading journalists, organised press conferences and interviews and distributed press releases, white papers and research reports on behalf of Amundi.

SPJ carried out these activities in close cooperation with the Belgian communications agency Cantilis that provides support for the Belgian and Luxembourg markets. Together we succeeded in positioning the initially unknown Amundi as one of the world’s leading asset managers.

Mittal Steel launched a public offer for Arcelor in 2006. The related objective was to form ArcelorMittal, the world’s leading steel company. The proposed transaction led to an unprecedentedly tough defence strategy on the part of Arcelor, which included strong political pressure.

SPJ’s role was to gain support for Mittal Steel among the Dutch media. SPJ formed part of an international media team led by Maitland in London and Image 7 in France. The key element of the media strategy with respect to this complex international transaction was to maintain daily contact with as many media as possible and to respond immediately to any negative reports.

For a seven-month period, the members of the international media team had contact daily and the company was provided with daily media overviews in order to keep it fully informed of the latest developments. SPJ focused on executing the media strategy in the Netherlands by convincing journalists of the strategic importance of the transaction through means including interviews and press conferences with Mittal’s senior management.

The intensity of the media programme surrounding the proposed acquisition of Arcelor by Mittal was one of the key factors in the successful completion of the transaction. This strategy resulted in the initial scepticism being transformed into broad support for Mittal Steel’s bid.

Hudson's Bay Company

Hudson’s Bay Company is one of the world’s fastest-growing department store chains with leading formulas such as Saks Fifth Avenue, Saks OFF 5TH, Hudson’s Bay, Lord & Taylor and GALERIA Kaufhof. SPJ supported the company’s introduction in the Dutch market in 2016.

Our role was to introduce Hudson’s Bay Company in the Netherlands. We advised the management on the media strategy in the Dutch market, maintained daily contacts with leading journalists and provided news overviews each day to keep the management informed of all relevant developments in the Dutch retail sector.

As the culmination of the communications process, SPJ organised a press conference for Hudson’s Bay in May 2016. The company announced at the event that it would open 20 department stores in the Netherlands. The press conference resulted in extremely extensive coverage and a clear positioning of Hudson’s Bay in the Dutch media.

A consortium led by The Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) launched a public offer for ABN AMRO in 2007. The proposed acquisition of one of the three leading banks in the Netherlands and the battle between the consortium and Barclays received an extremely high level of media attention.

With respect to this transaction, SPJ formed part of a British-Dutch media team that was led by Tulchan Communications in London. The team advised the RBS senior management on the media policy in the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.

Within this context, SPJ advised on the Dutch media strategy, informed RBS about the media sentiment in the Netherlands, executed the joint media strategy and kept RBS up to date on the media reporting every day. Our other activities included organising press trips, interviews and press conferences.

While the implementation of the acquisition was negatively influenced by the financial and banking crisis and the complexity of the break-up of ABN AMRO, the media reporting on RBS was exceptionally positive during the transaction period. Regular background meetings in Amsterdam and Edinburgh contributed to this positive sentiment.

Staples, an office solutions provider, launched an unsolicited offer in 2008 for the Dutch company Corporate Express that responded by announcing a ‘merger’ with the French family-owned company Lyreco. Most Dutch media supported Corporate Express’ management in the proposed transaction with Lyreco.

SPJ was asked during the course of the process to garner support for the Staples offer in the Dutch and international media in a last effort to ‘save’ the transaction. In cooperation with our British partner Maitland and after a brief media and market research study, we advised Staples’ management to raise the offer and to travel to Amsterdam to explain the rationale of the transaction to the national and international media in person. This had an extremely positive effect on the market and led to broad media support for the Staples offer.

SPJ’s role within the context of the transaction was to advise the client on core messages and the next steps that would be needed in order to regain control of the transaction. This led to an intensification of the contacts with investors and with the Dutch and international key media and ultimately resulted in a successful transaction.

UPS made a public offer for TNT Express in March 2012. UPS withdrew from the process in early 2013 following prolonged discussions with the European Commission regarding compensation measures in order to gain approval for the acquisition.

SPJ provided media relations support in the Netherlands for UPS for a period of fourteen months. We also advised UPS’ communications team in Atlanta on the media landscape in the Netherlands and relations with the wide group of stakeholders. Together with AMO partners Maitland in London and Abernathy MacGregor in New York, we advised UPS on the equity story and the core messages.

SPJ maintained daily contact with the main media in the Netherlands and informed UPS of the key developments on a daily basis. We organised press trips, press conferences, background briefings and interviews with UPS’ senior management.

The intensive contact with the Dutch media resulted in positive sentiment regarding UPS and understanding of the strategic rationale of the proposed acquisition of TNT Express by UPS.

bijBouwe was launched in December 2015 as the Netherlands’ first completely online mortgage lender. It is an initiative of Dynamic Credit that has been focussing on the analysis of mortgage portfolios since 2003. Based on this knowledge, it began managing mortgage portfolios for institutional investors that want to invest directly in the Dutch market in early 2014.

SPJ advises Dynamic Credit in the field of communications and media relations and was in this capacity also involved in the launch of bijBouwe. We drafted a communications plan, formulated the key messages and press release and established contacts with the leading media and other influencers in the mortgages market. We arranged a series of interviews in connection with the  introduction.

The introduction of bijBouwe was successful and the company has now gained a strong position in the Dutch mortgages market.
